Honold continues to drive the expansion. In Gerstetten, district of Dettingen / Albuch near Ulm, real estate developer and logistics firm Honold has acquired a 25,000 square meter plot of land with an expansion option on up to 7 hectares. There, the foundation stone for a new logistics center is to be laid in June 2018, which in the final stage of expansion can reach around 45,000 square meters. A new approach is to provide a state-of-the-art battery park for storing solar energy. First talks have already started.

Neu-Ulm, 13.04.2018The energy transition in Germany was a step towards preserving an intact environment. For the Honold Group as a family business, sustainability has been an integral part of the corporate philosophy for years, true to the company slogan “Logistics is green”. Now another step has been taken to advance innovative alternative energy solutions. Because a major shortcoming of solar or wind energy is their storage. Excess energy can often no longer be used today because adequate electricity storage is missing. One possible solution is battery parks. Thus, electricity generated by solar or wind power can be stored and, if necessary, delivered to the end user.

As a leading logistics company, the Honold Group has more than 750,000 square meters of space at various locations in Germany and Romania. Now, in June 2018 in Dettingen, the starting signal for another location with up to 7 hectares is due to fall. The novelty: The corporate leaders of Honold want to use the large area capacities also to act in the market as a supplier of state-of-the-art battery storage. Initial talks with a neighboring deep-frozen logistics center of one of Germany’s largest retailers are already underway. If the talks are successful, Honold will in the future store solar energy in its state-of-the-art batteries and feed it directly into the cooling cells of the neighboring logistics company.

The newly developed area in Dettingen am Albuch should be attractive, but not only for battery technology and power generators. The interest in areas in Dettingen is great, there are no concrete degrees. Honold is therefore in advance.

For the community of Gerstetten, the settlement of the family-owned company Honold with roots in the region is a complete success. The desired partner was found from a large number of interested parties. With the establishment of a logistics center in the community, the Honold Group is also consolidating its commitment in the Ulm area. For example, there are already several Honold locations in Herbrechtingen, Oberkochen and Neu-Ulm.

Honold will invest over 20 million euros in Dettingen in the long term. In the first step, six million will be invested in the project. Honold aims with the offer u.a. to power producers, who in the medium term depend on innovative concepts. A concrete anchor tenant Honold has not yet, but is in negotiations with several interested parties, including those interested in the Schwäbsichen Alb.

Honold’s goal is to offer not only conventional warehouse logistics but also a large battery storage facility as a pilot project. But at the same time, the company wants to raise the awareness among both politicians and the general public that Germany has an urgent need to catch up with regard to battery technology. In the opinion of the managing director Heiner Matthias Honold, the German industry has lost control over the key components of battery technology to the Asian manufacturers. The logistics plant in Dettingen is a small attempt by Honold to bring state-of-the-art technology back to Germany, more specifically, to the Swabian Alb.

Anyone who has followed the development of the Honold Group and its pioneering role in the high-tech logistics segment knows that the logistics company is working hard on the success of its new sustainable business idea. In a first step, electricity companies or other energy producers such as municipal utilities should be able to use second-life batteries as battery storage at cost price. Conventional customers will also appreciate the modern atmosphere.
